NASS Backs New Driver's Licence.
Driver's licence introduced by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) especially now that the scheme has gained the approval and recommendation of the United States of America (USA) and some countries in Europe, saying its ideal for national planning.
Speaking over the weekend in Abuja on the development, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu stated that the upgraded Driver's licence was a veritable tool that would provide the gateway for effective collation of accurate data on Nigerian drivers, which is necessary for national planning.
Ekweremadu who was undergoing the process of obtaining a Driver's licence at the national headquarters of the FRSC, said he came to process his Driver's licence as a symic stamp of authority following yesterday's lifting of the suspension order placed on the production of car number plate and Driver's license by the Senate.
LEADERSHIP gathered from the FRSC yesterday that the New Driver's license has been accepted and approved by the State of Maryland in the USA as a valid Driver's licence and also in some European countries.
The spokes person for the FRSC, Mr Jonas Agwu stated that the development was, indeed, a welcome one and a realistion of the Commission's key objectives which is to create a globally recognised and accepted license.
Similarly, the Deputy Senate President observed that the FRSC has remarkably transformed into a technologically- driven government agency which has achieved an effective re-alignment of motor vehicle administration in Nigeria.
He added, "What we have here in the FRSC in the area of information and communication technology can compete favourably with any other country across the globe".
Reacting to a possible time frame for drivers to switch over to the upgraded Driver's licence, the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka, said that a public pronouncement would soon follow the lifting of suspension order by the National Assembly.
