Only FG can end this acts of terrorism – Yakassai
Only Federal Government can end this acts of terrorism.
Elder statesman and former President Shehu Shagari's political adviser in the Second Republic, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, yesterday expressed doubt over the capability of northern leaders to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency in the region.
Yakassai, who spoke in an interview with National Mirror in reaction to the security challenges devastating the north, confessed that the unfortunate development was going beyond the capability of his kinsmen, pointing out that the best leaders of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) can do in the circumstance was to appeal to the conscience of the group.
According to the Northern leader, besides this, there was nothing much the northern leaders can do to effectively stop the attack in the region by the terrorist.
According to Yakassai, who is an influential member of AFC, whatever action contemplated by northern leaders in this direction would remain at the level of appeal or advise to this group and nothing more".
The octogenarian's reaction came on the heels of growing calls for northern leaders to play prominent and crucial role in the campaign to end insurgency that was devastating the north and its economy.
In his view, northern leaders have done the best they could by consistently calling on the extremists to lay down their arms and embrace peace.
"You and I know that there was nothing much they could do other than to keep talking and appealing to the group, the northern leaders don't control the police, the military or the SSS, these are all instrument sof the Federal Government that should be used effectively to combat this crime."
"When a similar situation occurred in the Niger Delta region, the Federal Government did not ask the leaders to intervene, neither did the leaders on their own got involved, it was entirely the initiative of the Federal Government and it was Only the Federal Government that could end this hostility," he insisted.
He contended, however, that the terrorists in the north were not known to the leaders. "They are not known to the government neither, so the best they can do is to keep talking, but nobody can pinpoint any individual as member of the group and talk to that person, so they cannot perform a miracle."
