Nigeria: Jonathan Flags Off Distribution of UBEC Books
Jonathan has flagged-off the Distribution of instructional materials for schools under the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) programme.
The flag-off ceremony held at the Model Primary School Maitama, Abuja, was performed by Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo, who represented him at the occasion.
The 15million worth of textbooks will be distributed to primary schools and 4.1 million library resource materials to junior secondary schools at N6.6 billion.
He said production of textbooks and instructional materials was not enough to guarantee quality education but the Books must be equitably distributed and used in classrooms.
Federal Government has spent N16.6 billion on provision of textbooks to public schools in the last two years but going by figures of the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa'i, funding declined last year.
Ruqayyatu appealed to UBEC to ensure they monitor the availability and usage of the Books in the schools.
Also yesterday, Federal Government inaugurated six Needs Assessment committees for the 104 Federal Unity Colleges spread across the nation.
Minister of State for Education, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, inaugurated the committees in Abuja.
