Lagos Doctors Express Fears Over Undocumented LSG Orde
Doctors Express Fears Over Undocumented LSG Order. Striking medical Doctors in Lagos State today expressed concern that the State Government has only indicated a suspension of their dismissals, as they have receive no formal notice to that effect. In an emergency press conference convened this afternoon, the Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Edamisan Temiye said, “It is an unfortunate impression that the Government is merely bidding for time and hoping to gain immediate public sympathy before such a time in future that it can give effect to the dismissals”.
Although the Medical Association said the Doctors are happy about the call back, but that certain terms have to be spelt out before the Doctors can return to work. One of such terms, Dr. Temiye stated, is that Government ought to have made it clear that the reinstatement is complete and would be without any reprisals.
Another term stated by the Medical Association involves the expected mode of the recall. “We request that the Government send letters of recall or reinstatement to all the Doctors who were issued separate and individual letters of dismissal”, Dr. Temiye said. Earlier today, the Chairman of the Lagos Medical Guild, Dr. Olumiyiwa Odusote, said that since the dismissal letters had been served within hours on the day the Doctors received the sack decision, they also expect that letters to the effect of recall should have been served at least the same day.
“This is about 24 hours after the news of the recall, but we are yet to receive any formal letter to the effect of the recall,” he pointed out. In a statement made available to the press, the Medical Association said it would resist any punitive measure that may surface after the recall of the Doctors. It also stated that the following the recall, the Doctors must be assured of protection against any form of maltreatment by the employer.
“Finally, in the light of the points earlier canvassed, we would like to make it categorically clear that our Association will not accept any punitive measure to any of the Doctors on account of any role played by them in the industrial dispute in line with relevant Conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) on the right of workers to embark on strikes,” the statement concluded.
