Facebook Chief Founder Is Now Married
Mark Zuckerberg and sweetheart-of-nine-years Priscilla Chan tie the knot in a surprise wedding ceremony on Saturday.
Facebook's billionaire founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has updated his relationship status to 'married'. The 28-year-old tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, 27-year-old Priscilla Chan, in a private ceremony at his California home.
The surprise wedding came just a day after Facebook went public through one of the largest initial public offerings ever, and its shares began trading on the Nasdaq. Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook timeline, "Married Priscilla Chan," on May 19.
The ceremony took place in Zuckerberg's backyard at his Palo Alto home before fewer than 100 guests on Saturday, and pictures show the rare occurance of the hoodie-loving CEO wearing a black suit and tie for the occasion. The picture got over 1,31,000 likes within the first 30 minutes of being posted.
The couple met at Harvard and have been together for more than nine years. Chan's Facebook page also had the updated relationship status, "married to Mark Zuckerberg."
The marriage capped an extremely eventful week for the two. Zuckerberg celebrated his
28th birthday on Monday, May 14. Days later, Facebook, which was founded by Zuckerberg in 2004 in his Harvard dorm, went public through an IPO that pegged the value of the social networking site at $104 billion. The same week, Chan graduated from the University of California, San Francisco. She studied medicine and is Now a paediatrician. On her graduation day, Zuckerberg had written on his page, "I am so proud of you Dr Chan."
Who is Priscilla Chan?
Priscilla, 27, is from Boston, and met Zuckerberg at a campus fraternity party, reportedly while he was waiting in line for the loo. A keen cook, Priscilla got her medical degree from University of California, San Francisco's School of Medicine, last Monday, and works as a paediatrician. Facebook's recently-launched feature allowing users to add their organ donation status to their profiles has been inspired by her.
Their surprise wedding on Saturday wasn't linked to FB going public, but to her graduation, which is what their 100-odd guests thought they were going to their Palo Alto home to celebrate. Instead, they were surprised with a wedding, websites reported. Zuckerberg gave her a ruby ring he designed himself.
