ANPP Advises FG on Azazi’s Comments on Boko Haram
Boko Haram sect.
Similarly, former Presidential Adviser to President Shehu Shagari in the Second Republic, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has called on Azazi to resign as the NSA because “he is incompetent and ignorant of the political and sectarian history of Nigeria.”
The National Chairman of ANPP, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who led a high-powered delegation of the ANPP on a condolence visit to the management of the THISDAY newspapers at its office in Abuja, said because of the privileged position occupied by the NSA, Nigerians are bound to believe what he said regarding the security situation in the country.
“The national adviser coordinates the country’s security efforts and when he talks he ought to be taken seriously by every Nigerian. He is privy to information that may not be available to other officer of government. Whenever the NSA speaks on any matter relating to security, we of the ANPP will take him very seriously and I believe that all other Nigerians do same,” he said.
Meanwhile, He also said that it was uncalled for, for the NSA to criticise the political party of his principal and therefore that the best way out is for General Azazi to resign immediately.
Fielding questions from journalists in Kano, the former Presidential Liaison Officer to the National Assembly said the NSA exhibited great incompetence to have said that the Boko Haram and the associated violence was as a result of zoning and rotation in Nigeria.
According to Yakasai, “I am calling on the NSA, General Azazi to resign from office because he has exhibited gross incompetence and ignorance for saying that the violence in the country is as a result of Boko Haram attack and the zoning and rotation of political office, particularly, the office of the President.”
For the avoidance of doubt, he said, “Boko Haram started in 2003 when Olusegun Obasanjo was President and in Yobe State, later Borno State and then to Bauchi State when the three states where under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
“Therefore for anybody, especially the NSA to associate the Boko Haram and the violence is a gross act of incompetence and ignorance. It shows that General Azazi does not understand the political terrain in Nigeria. Zoning and Rotation started in the political history of Nigeria as far back as 1979 during the era of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) for four years without any interruption,” Yakasai stated.
He further said during the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) convened by General Sani Abacha, adopted zoning and rotation, stating, “It is gross ignorance and incompetence for General Azazi to have said that the violence in the country is as a opposition to zoning and rotation because of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“Boko Haram violence has no bearing to the zoning and rotation as regards to President Jonathan. To have said anything to the contrary as the NSA said is nothing to show that he is not aware of the political history of the country and therefore not competent to be the NSA”. It has no connection to President Jonathan and the PDP,” he said.
