hmmmm David Cameron meets Myanmar President
David Cameron on Friday met Myanmar’s reform-minded President, Thein Sein, and was due to become the first world leader to hold talks with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi since she won a parliamentary seat.
Mr. Cameron flew from Kuala Lumpur to Myanmar as part of his four-nation tour of South-East Asia to hold talks with Mr. Thein Sein in Naypyitaw and thereafter with Ms. Suu Kyi in Yangon.
Ms. Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party won 43 of the 45 contested seats in April 1 by-elections, a landslide similar to its victory in the 1990 general elections when it won more than 80 per cent of the seats.
After the 1990 polls, the party was blocked from power by the former junta, which also kept Suu Kyi under house arrest for 15 years from 1989 to 2010.
The NLD’s participation in the by-elections was facilitated by Mr. Thein Sein, who opened a dialogue with the Nobel Peace Prize laureate in August, paving the way for her return to mainstream politics.
Before arriving in Myanmar, Mr. Cameron visited Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.
