Chei !! Fashola Vows To Make Lagos Tourist Attraction
Lagos State Governor Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola has vowed to Make Lagos state a Tourist destination in the African sub-regions.
In his short address at the carnival tagged ,‘Eko For Show’ which happened to be the high point of the weeklong series of activities to mark the Lagos heritage week , the governor said the carnival was strategically planned to boost the tourism potential of the state in line with Easter celebration.
According to him, the state government is committed to restoring its status as Nigeria’s commercial and industrial hub, adding that the city is being re-rebranded into a major tourist’s attraction.
“The Lagos carnival has grown in its three years of existence by reinventing itself and drawing more participants and spectators each year. It has become a vehicle through which the creativity of designers and the resourcefulness of the young men and women of the state skill acquisition centers in which all the costumes are produced are exhibited
“ The task of transforming Lagos state to a modern mega city and positioning it as not only Nigeria’s industrial and commercial hub but as a global competitors is a commitment to which the state is resolved”, he added.
He explained that this year’s theme showcases,” the traditional pride and dignity characteristic of Lagosians of old is back to our daily expression and aspiration. We are expressing who we naturally are, an industrious people”.
The governor emphasized that the economic implications of most of the ventures is that many of the youths are gainfully employed as tailors , welders and embellishers in the process of producing the costumes for the carnival.
The 2012 carnival parade which featured Emerald group, Logomeji, Awoyaya, Araromi, Epe Ifako- Ijaiye, Ikeja centre groups, among others offered lots of spectacles with different groups colorfully costumed putting up their best to put the state on global Tourist map.
As the colourful parade displaying several cultural heritages lasted, there was this deliberate attempt to invoke the Lagos life style of merriment and what is popularly known as ‘ owambe parties’ by the ceremonious groups thereby leaving long lasting impression in the minds of numerous the tourists and spectators.
Speaking with our correspondent, a Tourist who gave his name as Mr. Parker Gaffney from the United Kingdom described the carnival as splendid and colourful.
“I am in Nigeria, Lagos to for the carnival and I am enjoying the carnival and the weather. I was in the boat regatta show yesterday, it was wonderful”.
His perception was not different from that of Mrs. Comfort Onu who said “I am out with my family to enjoy my Easter break and the carnival has really provided me the opportunity to catch some fun. Life is not just about working but sometimes one need to relax and catch some fun. I commend the Lagos state Government for this.”
