Sunshine Stars To lodge Complaint Against Al Ahly
Sunshine Stars of Akure will lodge a Complaint to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) asking for re-examination of the circumstances surrounding its team’s loss to Al Ahly in Cairo during the second leg semi final of the Champions League on Sunday.
Egyptian fans, angered at the suspension of their domestic league, blocked the Nigerian delegation at the Baron hotel where they were lodged and held the team hostage few hours before the start of the all important match Against local side Ahly.
Reacting on what transpired in Egypt, the Executive Director of Ondo State Football Agency, that “with three hours to the kickoff, some footballers with some hoodlums came to our hotel saying we were not going to play, so I had to call the match commissioner who sent 300 security personnel to rescue us from the angry fans who held us hostage.
“This really affected the psyche of our players who were all scared because of the incident, and this reflected in the way they played.”
When asked about the next line of action he added: “Sure, we will definitely lodge a Complaint to Caf through the Nigerian Football Federation because this is not good for African football.”
It will be recalled that domestic leagues were suspended after a February 1 stadium disaster in which 74 people were killed. Many of the dead were Ahly fans who had travelled to Port Said for the match Against Al Masry.
