Mikel: Eagles Are Back
Eagles have regained quality form and will be a force to be taken seriously at next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. After weeks of apprehension, Nigeria secured the South Africa 2013 ticket on 8-3 aggregate after thrashing Liberia 6-1 on Saturday in Calabar. The Eagles had been struggling for quite a long time and capped it with their failure to reach the 2012 Nations Cup finals — the first time since the 1986 tournament. Mikel who played his first match for Nigeria since 2011 scored a goal from the penalty spot and helped out with an assist which was converted by Victor Moses for the sixth goal.
He say there will be more coming from the two-time African champions.
He said, “I am very happy that the Eagles have returned to winning ways in grand style. I am happy that we won the game in the manner we did, it was great. “It was overwhelming support from fans; it was heart warming. They haven’t seen anything yet from me and the Eagles. They should wait till the Nations Cup and the remaining World Cup qualifiers.” Mikel’s penalty goal was his third for Nigeria since he made his full international debut in 2005 and he said it was for the fans.
“The goal? It’s for the fans,” Mikel said. While the Eagles celebrated in Calabar, the result was also noted in England where Mikel and Moses play for European champions, Chelsea. The Stamford Bridge team congratulated both players via the Twitter as soon as the South African referee blew the final whistle. Chelsea tweeted, “Congratulations to John Mikel Obi and VictorMoseswho both scored as Nigeria beat Liberia 6-1 to make the Africa Cup of Nations finals.” The managers of the most lucrative football league in the world, the English Premier League were also keeping tab on events in Calabar and were quick to also respond via the same channel. The Premier League wrote, “Congrats to #CFC pair John Mikel Obi and Victor Moses for scoring in a 6-1 win over Liberia and helping Nigeria qualify for the 2013.” On his own, Moses celebrated with his fans across the world with this message, “Buzzin wiv the result and so glad to make da country happy. Lookin 4ward to makin Nigeria proud now at the African nations.” Ikechukwu Uche who scored the fourth goal tweeted, “We made it…Thanks guys for all your support. We love you all!”
