449 Students Shortlisted For Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme Slots
449 first class Students graduates of Universities across the federation yesterday sat For an aptitude test For selection in the Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme For innovation and development.
The Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, who supervised the conduct of the test at an ICT firm, Chams Plc, in Abuja, said that the short-listed 449 candidates met the selection criteria.
He disclosed that the best 100 candidates that would emerge from the test would be awarded the 2012 version of the Special Scholarship scheme.
Prof. Okojie noted that the selection criteria was purely based on merit, and refuted claims in some quarters that the criteria used For selection was a deliberate policy to marginalise some candidates in certain parts of the country.
He clarified that the Scholarship was For only Students that applied and those qualified were short-listed For the test, stressing that the commission had to go to the extent of outsourcing the process to an ICT firm to conduct the test in order to free the exercise from any form abuse.
He said: “That is why the membership of the committee of the Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme comprises a professor each, who made first-class from the six geo-political zones. So there was nothing like marginalisation”.
According to him, the Scheme was part of efforts to create a critical mass of manpower towards the actualisation of Vision 20:2020 and the government’s Transformation Agenda
He said: “Federal Government has plans to develop a critical mass of professionals who will serve as catalysts of change and agents of scientific and technological advancement.
“This sustainable economic development will be achieved through the sponsorship of these outstanding Students For postgraduate studies in the top 25 universities in the world.”
This means that it is only those candidates who are graduates from the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 academic session are qualify For these particular selection, ‘’he said
According to him, the selection was based on graduates who had obtained First Class Honours Degree from recognised and approved universities from various discipline including Sciences, Medicine, Basic Medical Sciences, Engineering, Economics, Special aspects of Biology, Nuclear Physics, Quantitative Genetics, Medical Biochemistry, Aeronautical engineering, among others.
Okojie further disclosed that the next selection of 100 first class candidates would be For capacity building For universities.
He said once these Students are through from these universities they are expected to come back with entrepreneur skills and work For the system as the next generation of academics For five years after which federal government would allow them to be on their own.
He added that two per cent of people with disabilities would also be given opportunity For the scholarship.
