UNILAG Emerges Best University In Nigeria
University of Lagos (UNILAG) established in 1960 by an Act of Parliament has shot into the lead in the global Webometric ranking as Nigeria’s number one university.
Ranked in the 16th position on the African continent, a release by the authority of the University said the 2012 ranking was based on the web popularity of the institution by International Colleges and Universities Web Ranking.
The top five universities in Africa according to the web ranking, are all in South Africa they include; University of Cape Town, Universiteit Stellenbosch, University of Pretoria, University of the Witwatersrand, and University of KwaZulu-Natal.
While Nigeria had an all federal government owned nine universities on the list, South Africa had a good showing on the list as twenty universities made it into the top 100 in Africa.
Other Nigerian universities on the list are the University of Ilorin (39), University of Ibadan (40), Obafemi Awolowo University (42), University of Benin (45), University of Port Harcourt (52), University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (64), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (84) and University of Jos 88).
It will be recalled that the local University admission regulatory authority Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) ranked UNILAG as the most sought after institution by students seeking admission into the nation’s 122 universities.
Webometric ranking is a measure of an institution’s presence on the web.
It is computed using a number of parameters that revolve round the quantum and quality of electronic resources on a web site as well as access to such resources.
